Type-Driven Book Jacket

The goal of this project was to design a type-driven book jacket for a classic novel. I chose the novel, One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest and incorporated a wired fence as the main design element. In the novel, one of the main themes revolves around freedom and confinement. The protagonist is confined in an asylum and they deal with mental illness. The meaning of someone flying over the cuckoo’s nest refers to losing your mind. I used Photoshop to juxtapose all of the elements together to evoke the feeling of being trapped.

Since the title included four Os, I decided to form them out of the fence. In order to emphasize the letters and typography, I added a blue-green hazy sky behind to add more depth to the cover as a whole. This helped create another layer to the feeling of the unknown as the main characters questioned what life must feel like in the outside world.

Process

The book cover went through many stages, and I learned how to create a simple and effective composition using typography as the main element of focus. I started out by sketching the composition of the fence and identified how the letters could work together with the main visuals.
